Q: “What is copyright infringement?”

Copyright infringement occurs when copyrighted work  – which can include anything from photography to software code – is used or reproduced without the owner’s permission. According to the United States Copyright Office, infringement occurs when “a copyrighted work is reproduced, distributed, performed, publicly displayed, or made into a derivative work without the permission of the copyright owner. It is important to note that a copyright symbol (©) is no longer required to receive copyright protection, yet it is still encouraged as a universal method of simple protection.
